Masterclass overview:

This lecture and interactive session will introduce skateboarding as a case study for carving out safer, inclusive and educational spaces and ‘third places’ for youth, girls and non-traditional participants of informal sports. The masterclass will be led by Dr Indigo Willing, a skateboarder, NSW Churchill Fellow and Affiliate Research Fellow at the Sydney University and Griffith University and co-author of ‘Skateboarding, Power and Change’ (with Anthony Pappalardo).

Participants will be encouraged to discuss and offer cross-disciplinary insights on the following:

1) How can urban spaces be used for creative play through introducing urban sports like skateboarding?

2) What are some of the under-recognised planning and design considerations that can welcome in more diverse users?

3) What strategies and programming can encourage multi-generational participation?

4) How can respectful behaviours and safer spaces be encouraged in places like skateparks when there are no formal authority figures (eg. no referees or coaches)?

5) What lessons can informal sports like skateboarding (that draw on street and subcultures) offer to mainstream sport?

This initiative is led by SSSHARC fellows Dr Indigo Willing, a war orphan, skateboarder and Vietnamese adoptee, and co-facilitated with Dr Xavier Ho, an Asian Australian (non-adoptee), games and interaction design expert. Invited experts include Dislah De Rham, a Sri Lankan adoptee, Nicky Hammond, a Korean adoptee and guest speaker Dr Victoria Rawlings, DECRA Fellow (non-adoptee).
